Alex MacLennan

About the Author:

Alex MacLennan is a writer trying to figure out how to live a writer’s life.

His first novel, The Zookeeper, was a finalist for numerous debut fiction and debut gay fiction awards, and his short story, "Touching the Pole" is featured in the summer ’08 anthology, Stress City: A Big Book of Fiction from 51 D.C. Guys. Two-to-three additional novels, depending on his mood and inclination to share, are underway. Currently, he writes for Conservation International and – less regularly – Hill Rag and DC North magazines.

Through it all, he tells stories that question place and purpose, family connections, people, the environment, and food.

"Alex MacLennan’s The Zookeeper is a wonderful debut–at once warm and intelligent, funny and affecting–about home and homelessness, and the ways in which we must free ourselves in order to go in search of the habitat of our true selves." –Richard McCann, author of Mother of Sorrows.

Stress City
"The dean of D.C.’s alternative press has compiled a vast compendium of excellence, wildness, and wonder. ...Sometimes surreal, often moving, and even more often perfectly hilarious, the work collected here makes D.C.’s literary presence a force to be reckoned with." –Toby Barlow, author of Sharp Teeth
